Happy Valentine’s Day football lovers

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV

Badge for giving up a TDPITTSBURGH – Happy Valentine’s Day to all you football lovers out there. May your favorite Pro team loose by a field goal to the Steelers in next year’s Super Bowl.

My winning streak ended. The past 2 days got away from me. Beer was the culprit Friday, which led to a very laid back day on Saturday. The tough thing to do is get back on the horse when you get bucked off it. That will be my focus now for Sunday.

However, it is Valentine’s Day. Maybe getting back on the horse might be easier said then done. Nonetheless, I must somehow to just that. And, it should be noted, Sunday is wide open. Despite losing Friday and Saturday, it will be a nice thing to head into the coming week with a winning day.

The whistle has blown. The ball is in the air. I got it. Now what I am going to do with it?

Keep on keeping on…

Badges TDPITTSBURGH – I am starting to really get into the new system. Yesterday, I hit the YMCA in the evening. Today, I plan to hit it in again in the morning. I just finished breakfast. Feeling pretty good. Of course that may all change when I open my door to deal with snow and ice once again. But, for now, as I blog, I am. I am feeling good.

Badge of Shame for Beer DrinkingToday’s endeavor is to keep it going and not slip. When it starts to feel easy is when you should be on the highest alert. Also, it is at times when you begin to notice slow progress, you get greedy for more. I want to avoid slipping into that mindset where I slowly work myself into a fervor about cutting this, slashing that and avoiding such and such (Naturally, I am talking about food). So I must keep doing what I am doing.

The Football Fans Diet Field Goal BadgeNo major plans this weekend that don’t involve a snow shovel. Valentine’s Day is coming but this year we are going to avoid the restaurants so hopefully dealing with piles of good grub will not be an issue. Football is over. There is basketball, but it ain’t quite the same. Nothing to do but keep on keeping on.

Ready for more, but still snowed in…

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV

The Football Fans Diet Field Goal BadgePITTSBURGH – There is not much to report that is dramatically different than yesterday’s post. It is cold. We are snowed in. School is canceled – again! I had another winning day on the Football Fan’s Diet (the perfect diet for beer-loving football fans everywhere). And, once again, it was a moderate win. Nothing fancy. Nothing sexy. Just a day of fairly mindful eating. I did get some exercise in the form of shoveling snow for about an hour.

I have updated the Box Scores section and the Current Record section so if you are interested in seeing how to score a season on the Football Fan’s Diet, I think you will find it fairly obvious after taking a quick peek.

My hope today is that the YMCA is open. I am feeling geared up to get back into the gym routine. Maybe then my strategy of “striving to hit the mark” will prove to have merit. This strategy, in case you haven’t been reading lately, involves shooting for a caloric level on a daily basis that should approximate what a man already at my ideal weight should be consuming. My theory is A) I won’t go hungry – since I am giving my body the food to fuel its natural weight; and B) I will starve off, albeit slowly, the weight I shouldn’t be maintaining, which is some 75-lbs worth of dangling beer gut and love handle workmanship.

I am hoping the key lies in the aforementioned Point A. You see early last year when I did achieve some significant success on the Football Fan’s Diet, there were many times I recall where I simply caved into my strict regimen. This usually resulted in nasty “red streaks” of simply not caring about health and eating whatever I want. I thought hard about how to prevent such streaks from even happening. The only thing I can think that might do it, is really establishing a Daily Game Day Objective that is “livable and satisfying” and not so draconian as to be unsustainable.

I think zeroing in on a caloric level for a man at my ideal weight might be the key. After all, you would think such a level would naturally keep me satisfied and content. You would also think, or hope perhaps, that the human body will simply “ignore” the extra weight you are not feeding and hence relegate it back to fuel. It is my theory.

So far, after a couple weeks, I have not experienced any evidence yet that this theory does not hold beer. I am going on 14 days straight of meeting my more modest “livable and satisfying” Daily Game Day objective. I am slowly and in decremental steps, losing some flab. More importantly, I have not been hungry and have been able to enjoy a beer or two. Now, if that is fine living, I have no idea what the hell is.

Snowed In, but “Health doesn’t take a snow day”

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV

Badges TDPITTSBURGH – It seems now for a week we have been snowed in. It is beginning to make me irritable. However, I have continued to find a way to eek out the winning day.

The Super Bowl was a bit of a fine line, however I think it was very close. I will error on the side that “Hey, I kept it close during the freaking Super Bowl.” I didn’t do much for the big game, but I did have a few beers at a local bar beforehand. By kickoff I was home watching the game from the confines of my game room. I remember I had to do some sit-ups to come under my Daily Game Day Objective – but I did. So I survived the Super Bowl.

The whole family is home because of the snow. School is canceled. Work is canceled. Shouldn’t I cancel my Football Fan’s Diet? Well the answer is “Health doesn’t take a snow day.” Okay, I just sounded like Mall Cop. The bottom line is we are all snowed in together. That is sort of fun. However, my back is sore, which may be due to the excess pounds I put back on since the end of Season III and I think I am irritable because I can’t make it to the gym. Call it a good irritability.

Alas, it is snowy outside and the golf swings of summer are but a dream. The next time we hear the cracking of football pads, I should be well near my goal. That is a good thing to visualize when you head out to grab the snow shovel. Did I mention that I am irritable?

Coach’s Week 2 Preseason Press Conference: Holding steady on the Football Fan’s Diet

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV, Weekly Review

By Matt De Reno’s Inner Health Coach
On The FFD

PITTSBURGH – Last week was a “Win” on the Football Fan’s Diet. Matt was able to hold steady. It inspired him to wax poetic – though as his Inner Health Coach, I am simply abhorred at the thought that this guy thinks he can be lyrical. What sort of pansy is this Matt? Well, here is his little ditty.

More snow is on the way. So they say. So they say.

Hey, what about today? Will I be healthy – yeah or nay?
Nay is not okay. Yeah would be gay.

The world is all but gray. Some new blizzard comes this way.

Holding steady I am. I will not sway.
Neither tomorrow nor today. This will be my way.

As the white falls. As the piles of white flakes grow. I will take my health from slow to whoa.
Now here I go – to shovel damn snow. Never a rest for me on the cursed FFD!

That about wants to make me puke!

Not entirely sure where that came from and what this says about this so-called “Football Fan.” I will say this: Last week was a most curious win for Matt becuase he had a lot of those “7″ point scoring days. I am half convinced that under my more strenuous guidelines last year, those “7s” would be losses. We are taking baby steps and getting better.

That is very good news. That means Matt can “live” on this thing. That means this is not a diet. He can actually make this a moderate lifestyle without feeling deprived of anything. Hey, he even had a couple six packs during the course of the week and yet he is showing a modest weight loss. That is what I have been after all along with this fat slob – you can have a little, not a lot.

This coming week I am a bit more inspired to push this bag of guts a little harder. You see I don’t want to make his super moderate goals de rigueur . I want Matt to get back into a role where he can kick it into high gear and really super charge his health system. This means I want to use this past week as the absolute moderate baseline from which Matt can push myself yet from which Matt can go back to should he get tired of hitting the gym and walking past the six pack refrigerator at the grocery store.

That is the plan for Matt in Week 2 of the Football Fan’s Diet. Press conference adjourned. Now, can somebody help shovel my car out?

Happy Super Bowl Sunday

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV

The Football Fans Diet Field Goal BadgeThere is nothing quite like the Super Bowl: The commercials. The hoopla. The excitement. The anticipation. The finality of the season. The celebrities. Like any football-loving fan, I live for the Super Bowl. This is what it is all about.

Badges TDIt is easy to loose sight of your health goals during such increased levels of male rite and ritual. This time, I plan to stay focused.

Of course I will be focused on my TV and all the aforementioned. But, I want to stay focused on the ball. That is my ball. My ball called health and my effort to not only get to, but win my Super Bowl on the Football Fan’s Diet.

I am off to a great modest start and the best thing is I am not “straining” to do. It is natural.

Do you ever notice how the great teams don’t struggle to be great. They just are great. They need to show up and be mentally prepared but excellence becomes ingrained.

The funny thing is that greatness is achieved in little steps. The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts are no different: the seeds of a championship season were sowed way back in the sweaty days of August.

Last year, I greatly enjoyed watching my favorite team, The Pittsburgh Steelers, win an unprecedented sixth Super Bowl championship. It was immediately afterward that I went on a personal tear of excellence. Even though the Steelers are not in it this year (becuase they failed to show up during the regular season) I plan to take it one step further.

Last year I actually got tired of being healthy. I distinctly recall several times during the year when after weeks of restriction and hard work, I was like, “I need a break.” Then the breaks were harder to break until ultimately I started down the path only to arrive right back where I started.

All was not lost. I did learn I can be healthy. I also learned I like to exercise. I learned the issues I had to deal with were primarily about using food as a mental break.

This new strategy aims to attack those reasons. This new strategy is based on taking a more measured approach so that when I get there, I will have been there. The new strategy is designed to ensure I am not simply “tired of doing it” as the season wears on. No doubt these are all subtle changes in my strategy, but they could make all the difference.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday. Go Saints!

The Great Snow Storm of 2010 and other icy thoughts…

The Football Fans Diet Field Goal BadgePITTSBURGH – It is hard to believe it is Super Bowl weekend. Here the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints are prepared to do battle in Super Bowl XLIV and I am sitting in Pittsburgh buried in the snow drifts from the Great Snow Storm of 2010.

Badges TDI know we are luckier than most. The power went out early last night, but it came back on. And, the whole tribe is snug inside safe and cozy. The little one is antsy to go bury me even further in a pile of snow. No doubt there are others skidding down roads or have awoken this morning to find a tree on their car if they can see their car at all. I know Washington, D.C. had come to a “grinding halt” as one local paper put it, but doesn’t Washington do that anyway – whether it is snowy or sunny?

Badge of Shame for Beer DrinkingMeanwhile, in South Beach, Florida a party rages. You have all the swanky clubs. You have topless beaches I suppose. You have nightlife. You have celebrities. You have football legends all cavorting and pulsating to the urban beat of tropical Miami. You know what? I would not trade places.

Everything is as it should be, a man wiser than me once said.

Wintering in Pittsburgh only makes the summer time that much more enjoyable, if indeed, we will ever have another summer again in Western Pa.

What this post has to do with being healthy, I am not sure. Perhaps only that if I keep working at being healthy on the Football Fan’s Diet, the sun is bound to shine again? Ah, that is a warming notion in a blog post of icy thoughts.

Now where is my snow shovel.

Super Bowl weekend approaches

Badges TDPITTSBURGH – Yesterday was another good solid day on the Football Fan’s Diet. A workmanlike effort at the YMCA capped a 10-0 shut out of my Inner Fat Slob. In fact, this morning was another session at the YMCA, which puts Friday off to a good start too. I enjoyed a decent movie yesterday, not a great one, but decent. The movie was called Doubt. You can read all about it on CoolFilmz.com, our sister Web site. Other sites include FunnyNewz.com, which as of late has taken a very bizarre twist in terms of content. The Football Fan’s Diet is merely one great web magazine in a suite of them intended for the modern man’s lifestyle. Enough with the shameless plugs. We got health and football to talk about. It is Super Bowl week after all.

The Football Fans Diet Field Goal BadgeSuper Bowl weekend is always filled with traps for the healthy-minded football fan. You got cheese dips, wings, pizzas, chips — you name it. It is almost darn near impossible to not give up some points on Super Sunday. You know what? If you must, go ahead and enjoy yourself. You don’t need my permission but you got it.

Me, I am going to try—try being the operative word—to stick to what I am doing. After all, I could well be headed into a week where I may just start to see the results of my slow and steady progress. After all, I have to get to my Super Bowl. How will you get to yours? That question should be at the back of your mind, somewhere between the beer and the nachos.

Three days of unusual scoring

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV

By Matt DeReno
On The FFD

PITTSBURGH – I noticed a very bizarre sequence of scoring this week: three days of touchdowns without any exercise. I alluded to this in yesterday’s post but today I should emphasize why this could be significant.

It is rare that I actually win days on which I do not exercise. In fact, reviewing the entire previous full season of scoring data (Season III on the Football Fan’s Diet) I noticed that out of nearly 154 days (22 weeks) only on 5 of those days would I do the following: win without having exercised. Almost to a tee: the days I won, all included exercise.

Badges TDYou may recall that I give myself a field goal for exercise (3 points). So the maximum score I can get on any given day is a 10. I got quite a lot of 10s and on those 10 days, I won. However, seldom were the 7-0 days and the 7-3 days. This means when I didn’t exercise, I had little concept of how to live healthy and naturally.

I think that reflects an all or nothing at all mentality. It was as if I felt that if I did not exercise, the day was mostly a loss anyway. This thinking dooms one’s long-term efforts at being healthy day-in and day-out.

Now consider those 7s I just notched: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I had all but five 7s total for one whole complete season. Now I have 3 consecutive 7s already. This means I actually ate within my means and didn’t exercise. This means I could be learning something like how to be healthy.

When eating becomes first nature – again

Published by Scratch under Preseason, Season IV

By Matt DeReno
On The FFD

Badges TD
PITTSBURGH – As my progress continues on The Football Fan’s Diet, I am glad to report that so far, since the Combines at least, my theory that I should strive to “hit the daily mark” in terms of how many calories it would take to sustain my ideal weight—or my goal weight at least—is showing signs of real promise. Those signs comes in digital readouts, and unlike the stock market, when these numbers go down, elation goes up. I am lighter on my feet—literally and figuratively.

I am on a 5-day scoring streak. However, what is noticeably different than on the previous 8-day scoring streak, which I notched early in Jan. (only to segue to 2 weeks of giving up and ultimately starting over), I feel much more content. Why?

Is it because I am “hitting the mark?” Does my body not care about dieting at all, because it is getting what it wants? No more. No less.

Time will only tell. However, the past 5 days have been nice and steady with nary a trace of deprivation. There has even been some beer in there and a good fried fish sandwich. Is eating becoming first nature again? I say “first nature” becuase I believe eating healthy is first nature.

“Second nature” is eating like a fat slob. Now eating like a fat slob had become second nature to me for years in fact. However, it remains to be seen—first or second—which one is my “true nature.”

Another unusual thing is that yesterday is the rare touchdown only and shutout: I scored 7 points and gave up 0. That is there is no exercise and no beer field goals given up could prove to be significant for several reasons, mostly because one should not feel they must exercise to be healthy. One should be healthy day in and day out, no matter what activities you have lined up for the day. Usually, in past efforts on the FFD, I would have to “make up for” some eating by hitting the gym. I shouldn’t have to “make up for” what I eat on the Football Fan’s Diet. After all, healthy eating for football fans and all others alike, can and should be attained with moderation and sensibility in mind. And so Season IV on the FFD continues.
